On 1 January 1950, Travancore- Cochin was recognised as a state.On 1 November 1956, the state of Kerala was formed by the state Re organisation Act merging the malabar district, Travancore - Cochin (excluding four sauthern taluks,which were merged with Tamil Nadu),and the taluk of south Kanara.
The earlist mention of the word KERALA find its way back to the 3rd century BCE on a rock inscription from mauryan dynasty,but it is also believed that the state was named after Keralian Thamboran,the rulers of an idependent province in soutern India,which was present-day Kerala.Kerala is a small state,constituting only about 1 percent of the total area of the country.Kerala stretches for about 360 miles(580 KM0 along the malabar coast,varying in width from rougly 30 to 120 km.It is bordered by the states of Karnataka to the north and Tamil Nadu to the east and by the Arabian sea to the South and west:it also surrounded mahe,a segment of the state of Puducherry ,on the north western coast.
Kerala consists of 14 states .The capital of Keral is Thiruvananthapuram.
